The Big Flower Fight (Netflix)

06/06/2020

Fighting to see the flower arrangements in the dark settings of The Big Flower Fight.

The new British television competition programme first broadcast on Netflix from 18 May 2020 is a contest in the style of The Great British Bake Off and The Great British Sewing Bee but with the of flowers instead of flour.

The episodes seem to focus mainly on the top two and bottom two of the week and the other teams seem to be background making it predictable as to who will leave and who will be 'best in bloom'.

There is the jeopardy of who will be the fastest to the best plants or metal structure skeletons. With teams hoarding plants or mirrors to hinder other teams.

It is a typical Netflix programme having teams from America and Europe, in order to make one show that can be played out in any country without having to make spin off series.

Where the show is a let down is in the artistic styling. The teams work extremely hard to create animals, dresses and mobiles to be ruined at judging time with the artistic decision of the producers to display the pieces in a dark barn, lighting the sculptures from odd angles with coloured gels, while it's impact is probably very arty, for viewers judging the overall impact of a design it's quite impossible to see the flowers let alone the silhouettes created. Add to this the over use the next episode of dry ice, it's very distracting from what could be a beautifully visually impactful show of flowers and vegetation.

If you like a simple creative competition then this is an easy watch, a classic edit tagging on the tail strings of the successful forbears but not living up to the originals.

If there's a next series leave the coloured flares, dry ice and coloured gels at the special effects studio. And just display the teams creations.
